Streaming Video on 80’s Gaming Hardware

Description

What happens when you try to build a video streaming platform using hardware that predates the World Wide Web? This talk explores an ambitious project that transforms the humble Sega Mega Drive / Sega Genesis into a full streaming video player. From coaxing performance out of 16-bit sprite hardware, to custom video encoding, to surprising compression schemes, to some very ugly hardware hacking, we finally achieve 240p at 10fps with 8-bit audio. Come see a complete streaming player inside 64KB of RAM! This talk was presented at Demuxed 2025 in London, a conference by and for engineers working in video. Every year we host a conference with lots of great new talks like this – learn more at https://demuxed.com
