AV1 video coding standard was developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) by 2018. The first part of the talk will focus on AV1 productization at Netflix. Rolling out a new codec in production has its challenges, and the benefits should be weighted against the costs. The talk will give an overview of AV1 codec rollout at Netflix, including visual quality aspects, and demonstrate the benefits of using this codec for delivery of Netflix content in VoD.

The second part of the talk will offer a glimpse of the research conducted by AOMedia on video compression beyond AV1. It will present the current status of the research and show the performance of its AOMedia video model (AVM) software compared to the state of the art.
