Dynamic Ad Insertion (DAI) is a way of seamlessly introducing personalized ads to each client based on its profile. The playlist manipulator responsible for ad insertion is an edge processing operation that analyzes the base playlist and inserts the Ad according to information for an Ad server. This task proved to be very complicated when using HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) in a low latency mode because chunks signalization dramatically increases the number of requests and playlist updates. Moreover, Ads should already be prepared in a chunked mode so that a live player finds the next chunk to display on time. In this context, we present our integration of HLS low latency playlist manipulation associated with a CDN. We managed to handle the time constraints and Ad servers’ communication while remaining conformant to the HLS specification and compliant with most existing players. This solution is a game changer in the Edge video distribution and would additionally have tremendous benefits from the emergent 5G technology thanks to the multi access edge computing (MEC) enabling native cloud technology for the data plane and control plane.
