Description
There are many streaming use cases in which latency plays a critical role. Sports. Gaming. Gambling. And each of those use cases presents different technical challenges because they have different demands on how quickly bits are returned to a viewer’s request. In this webinar we’ll pull from the recently published Alliance document, Best Practices For Reducing Live Stream Latency, to explore the different kinds of latency and some of the best practices for tackling the various technical challenges to achieving a better live streaming experience.
This webinar will be moderated by Jason Thibeault, Executive Director of the Streaming Video Alliance.
Topics Covered
Some of the questions covered in this webinar include:
- What are the different levels of latency and to what use cases do they apply? Are there specific protocols best designed for each of these use cases?
- Are there tradeoffs between latency and video quality? What’s the relationship between bitrate changes and latency?
- How does latency within the workflow affect the overall viewer experience? Are there areas within the workflow where latency can be reduced to improve the time to deliver the video?
- When talking about segment size and player buffer, what is the optimum length to balance between video availability (if there is a network disconnection) and get as close to real-time as possible?
- What are the most important metrics for measuring latency? Is it just RTT? Or is it a combination of metrics?
- How can the encoder be better tuned to improve latency? How can the need for multiple renditions (bitrates) and packages (formats) be balanced against the speed of getting the content into cache?
- Can alternative delivery technologies or delivery approaches, like Peer-to-Peer/Peer-Assisted, help with improving the latency?
- Can emerging protocols, like HESP, improve overall latency without complicating the operator’s workflow and/or processes?
- Live streaming today has limitations that need to be addressed. What can be done about delivering quality 4K at scale?
- Is the industry ready now to deploy at scale these Low latency services ? Are there any missing pieces in the workflow (DAI, DRM, …)?
