Description
Whether or not edge computing is the next generation of cloud technology, the edge plays a vital role in the streaming video experience. The closer a video is stored to the requesting user, the faster the delivery and better the experience. But, streaming also provides a lot more opportunity for interactivity, engagement, and data collection than traditional broadcast television. That means as the edge grows in compute capacity and functionality, it could enable new and exciting use cases, such as AI, that could improve the viewer experience. In this webinar, we’ll explore the state of edge computing and how it might be leveraged in streaming video.
Topics Covered
- What is the edge? It is a special set of servers or software? What makes it so different from traditional cloud resources like CDNs?
- Obviously, putting content closer to the end user can lead to a better video experience (by reducing round trip time), but what are some other ways it can improve it?
- Will the edge have a lot of compute? Storage? Something else? How will content owners and distributors take advantage of those resources?
- What role will hardware play in the edge? Will they have increased GPUs? More powerful FGPAs?
- If the edge becomes more powerful, both in compute and storage, what kinds of video processing activities can be moved there to improve viewer experience?
- What role does the device play in the edge? Will it be possible to extend edge functionality to mobile handsets or into the home?
- With decreased latency afforded by shorter round trip times (because the resources are at the edge), will we see an increase in interactive video experiences? Will the availability of closer compute resources change video advertising?
- Compute-intensive video events (like analytics, automation, and AI/ML) haven’t historically been in real-time. Will the edge enable such technologies to become so and how will that improve video delivery, viewing, and even interactivity?
- How will the edge evolve over the next few years? What kind of functionality may be available to video?
