Description

Most streaming platform operators employ multiple CDNs today but doing so effectively (and quickly) can be very challenging. It requires both programming (business logic) and data. Unfortunately, there isn’t a standard way to do this. Operators either have to roll their own or choose a vendor who’s service may not work exactly as required (but is “good enough”). And, what’s more, there isn’t a real consensus on whether or not this CDN switching should be done at the client or server. Thankfully, data solutions have come into the market, like CMCD, that can provide information to help facilitate automated decision making. In this webinar, members of the SVTA Players and Playback group will talk about the current state of multi-CDN switching, some of the work being done in the group, and what’s next.

Topics Covered

This webinar covered the following topics and questions:
  1. Obviously, multi-CDN delivery is all about CDN Switching or, as it’s being called now more narrowly, content steering. What are the different ways this can be accomplished?
  2. What’s needed to enable content steering? What are the components?
  3. What are the challenges with content steering? What do streaming operators need to consider before making this a part of their streaming workflow?
  4. How can content steering be monitored to ensure that it’s operating effectively and efficiently? Is it just log data?
  5. What kind of data can be used to make content steering decisions and where does it come from?
  6. Given how long Multi-CDN has been around (and all the different approaches we talked about at the start of this webinar), what is the state of the industry? Is there any consensus on how it should be done?
  7. From a technical side, what problems are still open and what are the main research challenges that the community should address?
