Live sports streaming is online video’s current big battle ground. Everyone from rights holders to rights licensors, from broadcasters to sports leagues, are jumping on the bandwagon to push live sporting events OTT. But it’s not as easy as it might appear. Hyper-concerned with latency (the time difference between streaming and traditional broadcast), scalability, and reliability, live sports distributors, whether incumbent providers like NBC or new entrants like DAZN, are struggling to ensure their streaming experience meets viewer expectations. But beyond just delivery, live streaming sports also provides a myriad of new opportunities such as interactivity, multi-camera switching, and social integration that can change the viewing experience.
